Having seen a valuable away win slip from their gasp last time out, the Promise Keepers will be looking to adjust against the People’s Elephant
Akwa United welcome seven-time Nigeria Professional Football League champions Enyimba to the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Abdu Maikaba’s side want to quickly forget what was a disappointing result when they visited Remo Stars last weekend. Goals from Friday Ubong and Musa Newman saw the Uyo outfit take a 2-1 lead on 85 minutes but a Victor Mbaoma penalty three minutes later meant both teams took a the share of the spoils.
It was supposed to be a rear victory for the Promise Keepers, something they’ve achieved just once this season. They sit fourth on the NPFL table on 40 points with a game in hand.
Gbenga Ogunbote’s side recorded a resounding 4-0 home victory over El-Kanemi Warriors courtesy of a brace from Chinonso Okonwo as well as goals from Ikechukwu Ibenegbu and Stephen Chukwude.
The win has propelled Enyimba to third position, which sees them back in the hunt for a continental berth and possibly the NPFL title as they are eight points behind leaders Plateau United.
Akwa United have been on the receiving end against Enyimba in recent times. They’ve not beaten the Aba based team in the previous five meetings dating back to 2014. The People’s Elephant recorded a double last season and have already beaten Maikaba’s side in their makeshift Calabar home this season.
With just one point and position separating both sides, it’s all to play for in Uyo on Sunday. The Promise Keepers will hope to bounce back from the Remo Stars disappointment.
