The arrest of Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Monday morning has been confirmed by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).
Spokesman of the Service, Mr Sunday James, however disclosed that Senator Melaye’s arrested by Immigration officials was “based on instruction”.
The confirmation came hours after the senator announced the arrest on his Twitter handle at about 7:32 a.m.
“I have just been arrested at the international wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on my way to Morocco for an official engagement sponsored by the Federal Government after checking in,”, his tweet said.
The police recently declared Melaye wanted after he was accused of supplying arms to some murder suspects, who allegedly implicated him.
The senator have since denied the allegations, describing the allegations as politically motivated.
He was later put on INTERPOL’s wanted list, which the agency refused to enforce, arguing that it would not be dragged into local politics.
