Ending Insurgency: Multiple Explosions Kill 31 in Borno 3 Days To Deadline

About three days to December 31, 2015 deadline issued by President Muhammadu Buhari to wipe out the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents, multiple explosions in Borno State capital, Maiduguri have left about 31 persons injured, leaving others wounded.

The blasts followed a failed attack on the city by the Islamic Sect.

Members of the sect were reported to had detonated explosion in three different areas of the metropolis, including Bullumkuttu, Bakassi area and Damboa road behind CBN quarters.

According to residents of the areas, the explosion that rocked the state capital Monday morning killed a resident of Bakassi ward, Bulama Modu Gana along with three others.

Another IED that exploded at Bullumkuttu also killed 20 people, while the one which occurred at Damboa road behind CBN quarters killed another 6 people with several others reportedly injured.

According to a member of the civilian JTF at Bullumkuttu, identified as Kabiru Tijjani, many of the suicide bombers got into town during the attempt by the insurgents to take over the city on Sunday.

“The street of Maiduguri is empty as everybody is in their houses, except for us civilian JTF and soldiers” Tijjani said.

The Street Reporters learnt the attack Sunday and the suicide bombing Monday morning came as the insurgents regrouped.

“After several failed attempt to take over Maiduguri, these people are still coming to attack again. This is not good, most especially now that we are seeing the effort of the military. If not for the interception of the fighters yesterday, Maiduguri would have been terrible this morning”, a resident said.

Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in the region had confirmed the attack saying  21 people in were killed in the attacks.

Mohammed Kanar, head of NEMA in the region, insisted that 21 people had died and 91 were injured when jihadists stormed Jiddari Polo, on the outskirts of Maiduguri, at around 6:30 pm (1730 GMT), shooting guns and unleashing waves of young suicide bombers.

Further attacks rocked the city on Monday, leaving at least one person dead.

“There have been more than a dozen suicide blasts in Maiduguri between last night and this morning,” Babakura Kolo, a civilian vigilante assisting the military in fighting Boko Haram, said to AFP.

“The suicide attacks were carried out by young suicide bombers who managed to make their way into the city during the gun battle between soldiers and Boko Haram gunmen last night.”
