Demolition: Ashade Traders Seek Ambode’s Intervention

Ashade-market2Traders in Ashade market, Agege Local Government Area, have appealed to the state governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, to stop the demolition of their shops and stalls by a developer.

The traders made the appeal on Friday, after a section of the market was said to have been demolished by the developer on Thursday.

The traders said the developer who gave her name as Mrs. Dosumu, stormed the market on Thursday morning with Armed military personnel who drove into the market with unmarked vehicles.

The traders also alleged that the said developer acted in obedience to a court order delivered by Justice A. M. Lawal, of Court 35, of Ikeja High Court.

In the order of interim injunction September 18, 2015, Justice Lawal, the parties in the suit to maintain statue quo, by not disturbing the possession of the claimants pending the determination the motion on notice dated August 18, 2015, filed by the traders against Agege Local Government, Mr. Monsur Alao Owolabi, and MOA Link Limited.

A trader in the market, Alhaji Tunde Abereoje, described the action of the developer as injustice and uncalled for, saying that the local government which the developer claimed to be acting for has acted contrary to an order of this court.

He said: “We have been to court and there is an injunction that the market should not be demolished until the hearing and determination of our motion on notice.

“But to our surprise, a woman just came into the market on Thursday, with thugs after and area boys backed by armed soldiers who stormed the market with unmarked vehicles and started demolishing our market.

“There is no prior notice that the market will be demolished since we still have a pending suit a gait the local government.

“We are appealing to Governor Ambode to stop the demolition and rebuild the demolished section.”

Another trader, Mrs. Vivian Amaka Eze, said: “we were at the market on Thursday when a woman came in and introduced herself as a developer from the local government, the next thing we saw was that a section of the market was being pull down.

“All entreat on the woman that there is a court order that that stopped an attempt to demolish the market fell on the deaf hear of the woman, not until when we reported to the Police at Isoko police station, before the woman and her ‘team’, left the market.

“We have never witness this kind of things, where shops will be demolished without any notice.

“Governor Ambode should investigate intervene our matter. If the government said it does not want street trading and our shops are being demolished without notice, where do government wants us to trade?

“Governor ambode should help us from being send to the streets, and engaged in other unwholesome things”.

However, when this medium called the said developer on the traders allegation, she claimed to be acting on behalf of Agege local government, and urged the reporter to come to the Council’s Secretariat on Tuesday, for her reaction.”

She said: “am acting on behalf of Agege local government, you can come to the Council on Thursday, for our reaction.
