The Delta State Governor, Hon. Ifeanyi Okowa is set to tackle increasing rate of indiscriminate parking of vehicles by tanker drivers in parts of the state.
To this end, the Governor has inaugurated a special task force to deal with the menace caused by petroleum tanker drivers along various routes leading to the Warri Refinery and its environs.
The task force came on the heels of incessant traffic congestion, fire outbreak and increasing road accidents traced to the indiscriminate parking by tanker drivers especially on the Ekpan axis in Uvwie Local Government Area of the state.
Okowa, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Hon Festus Ovie Agas, said the establishment of the task force would forestall further loss of lives and property caused by the activities of tanker drivers in the area.
The indiscriminate parking of tankers along the NPA Expressway, Warri Refinery and environs and Ubeji-Ifie Road have posed dangers to lives and motorists and have resulted in various accident that have claimed lives and property worth millions of naira”, the Governor said.
The task force which has as its Chairman, the Warri Area Commander, ACP Mohammed Mu’azu, was also tasked to identify causes of traffic congestion and how it can be eliminated.
The task force is also to work out suitable traffic management scheme on major routes where petroleum tankers waiting to lift products are to park, collaborate with the tank farm owners and PPMC to work out modalities for orderly lifting of the product in Warri and environs.
“Government shall continue to provide the enabling environment for everyone to carry out their businesses and on this note, I call upon members of Petroleum Tanker Drivers to fully cooperate with the taskforce”, the governor added.
