Protesters Storm National Assembly Over Anti-social Media Bill

Social Media ProtestProtesters on Tuesday took on the National Assembly over proposed anti social media bill.

Titled “Frivolous Petitions (Prohibitions, Etc.) Bill, 2015″ was sponsored by Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah, the Deputy Senate Leader, who represents Kebbi South Senatorial District.

 

The protesters with placards reading, “Social Media Bill is anti-people” were chorusing “we no go gree o” in obvious angst, asking the lawmakers to stop further actions on the bill.

They were however stopped at the first gate by heavily armed Policemen who insisted they would not be allowed to enter the National Assembly.

The protester who stormed the Assembly in large numbers, were mostly dressed in black attires, with some in sealed black sellotape on their mouths.

The protesters accused the Senators of attempting to gag the press likened Decree 4 of the past Military era, stressing that they would do everything they can to resist it.

A lady who was addressing the protesters whose name could not be confirmed by expressed disappointment on Senators of the 8th Assembly, explaining that all of them were intellectually bankrupt if they could not understand the contribution of the social media which has evolved in the 21st century.

“Attempt by the Nigeria Senators to gag social media shows they are intellectually bankrupt, especially that they could not understand the contribution of social media in the 21st century,” she said.

Security agents who barricaded the entrance of the National Assembly gate urged the protesters to be peaceful.
