Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari has insisted that Biafra agitation won’t be tolerated by his administration.

The President told Aljazeera television that over two million lives were lost during the Nigeria civil war between 1967 to 1970 that resulted from the demand for Biafra.

Vanguard quoted President Buhari as saying: “At least two millions Nigerians were killed in the Biafra war. And for somebody to wake up, may be they weren’t born then, looking for Biafra after two millions people were killed, they are joking with the security and Nigeria won’t tolerate Biafra.”

The Street Reporters recall that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and other pro-Biafra groups had accused Nigerian armed fprces of shooting and killing unarmed protesters demanding the release of the detained Director of Radio Biafra and IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who was arrest in Lagos in October last year.

The groups also accused the military of destroying evidence in attempt to cover up the killings by burning the decomposing bodies of the victims in a borrow pit in Aba, Abia State.

The IPOB leader has dragged the Federal Government of Nigeria to the ECOWAS Court, demanding $800,000 as compensation for unlawful detention.

The damages, when converted to naira at N300 to a dollar, amount to N240m.

In a suit filed at the court in Abuja on Thursday with No. ECW/CCJ/APP/06/16, a copy of which was sent to The Street Reporters, Kanu’s counsel, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, is claiming on that his client’s continued detention violates Articles 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, and 20 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights; Articles 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 10, 12, 22 and 26 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights; Articles 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 13, 17, 20, 21 and 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; Article 22 Paragraph 1 of the Covenant of the League of Nations; and Resolution 2625 (XXV) of the United Nations Charter of 1970.

Kanu also cited rulings of courts of competent jurisdiction and orders directing the defendants to release him, which were flagrantly disobeyed by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government.
